Meet Ingólfur: Our Neighbor and Team Member

Background

Ingólfur, whom we fondly call Ingó, is a vegetable farmer who lives nearby. He originally hails from the Snæfellsnes peninsula in western Iceland. As a teenager, Ingólfur moved to this area to pursue his studies. During that time, he met his partner, who lived on a farm close by.

Work and Skills

Ingólfur has worked with us for since 2023. He is known for his skill and rapport with both the dogs and our customers. Ingó brings a positive and fun energy to our team.

Interests

Ingólfur is passionate about healthy food and living. He is also interested in alternative medicine, farming, music, and football.

The Horse Enthusiast

Background and Family

Kristján, affectionately known as Kiddi, is the father of Bergþóra. Throughout his life, he has dedicated himself to both farming and working on a fishing boat. After many years of hard work in these demanding professions, he is now retired.

Continued Support and Daily Contributions

In his retirement, Kiddi remains an invaluable source of support, assisting with building projects and maintenance tasks. He is always ready to lend a hand, whether it involves shoveling snow with the tractor or taking care of small repairs around the house, such as fixing a leaky sink or addressing issues when the water freezes.

Passion for Horses

Kiddi has a longstanding passion for horses, a hobby that has played a significant role in his life. At one point, he owned as many as 50 horses, all of which he personally broke in, trained, and eventually sold. In recent years, he has scaled back and now owns about 10 horses, but his enthusiasm for them remains undiminished.

Health Challenges

In April 2024, Kiddi suffered a serious stroke. Although the effects have slowed him down, he continues to do what he can, demonstrating resilience and a strong commitment to helping out wherever possible.

Hjördís is one of the most important cornerstones of Snow Dogs

Hjördís is the mother of Sæmundur and the cornerstone of our journey into dog sledding. Without her, we would not have any dogs, and without dogs, there would be no dog sledding company. Her influence and dedication have shaped the very existence of our business.

Pioneering Siberian Husky Breeding in Iceland

As one of the first Siberian Husky breeders in Iceland, Hjördís has played a pivotal role in bringing these remarkable dogs to the country. She acquired her first Siberian Husky in 2003, laying the foundation for our future endeavors. Thanks to her vision and efforts, we were able to establish Snow Dogs.

Our Dogs’ Lineage

In 2015, Hjördís had a litter for us, followed by another in 2016. Nearly all the dogs we have today, except for the three we imported from other countries, are direct descendants of these litters. During our early years of operating dog sledding tours, she generously lent us some of her own dogs, helping us build and maintain our team.

Ongoing Support and Care

Currently, Hjördís owns four Siberian Huskies. Our partnership goes beyond breeding; she sometimes takes care of our dogs when we have days off, and we return the favor by watching her dogs as well. This close relationship has been invaluable to our company and the well-being of our dogs.

Snjólaug called Snjóka

Snjólaug, also known as Snjóka, is the devoted mother of Bergþóra and here sisters. She has spent almost her entire life living on a farm, where her dedication to her family and household is unwavering. Eydís

The carpenter that fixes things :)

Background and Professional Skills

Eydís is one of Bergthora's sisters and is a skilled carpenter by profession. She worked with us for several years during our busy building phases, significantly contributing to the construction projects.

Contributions Beyond Carpentry

In addition to her carpentry work, Eydís played a vital role in caring for the dogs and mushing our dog sledding tours. In our opinion, she was an excellent musher, and it was a great advantage to have someone on the team with such a valuable combination of skills.

Attention to the Dogs' Well-being

Eydís is particularly attentive to the dogs' emotional and social needs. She carefully observes how the dogs are feeling, especially in their social interactions, ensuring their overall well-being.

Ongoing Support and Versatility

Currently, Eydís occasionally takes care of the dogs when we are unable to be present around the clock. She mushes our tours and she also continues to use her carpentry expertise as needed, repairing or improving things on site. While we are capable of handling certain tasks, Eydís consistently completes them more efficiently and with better results.

Sæmundur, known as Sæmi, is essential to the daily operations of our business. He ensures that all bills are paid and invoices are sent out on time. Sæmi also manages the majority of our email correspondence, maintains our website, and, without his efforts, it is likely that the company itself would not exist.

Background and Skills

Sæmi holds a degree in house painting and has previously worked as both a building contractor and a national park ranger. His experience makes him highly skilled at making things look appealing, and he brings a practical approach to maintenance tasks within the company.

Personal Interests

Role as Caretaker

Growing up on a farm surrounded by various animals, Bergþóra gained extensive experience in animal care early in life. She trained sheep dogs for herding and also worked on breaking in horses. At one point, she even considered becoming a professional horse trainer.

Bergþóra is also a biologist, with a focus on birds, insects, and ecology. Her scientific background informs her approach to animal care and her understanding of the natural world.

Personal Interests

Deeply passionate about the outdoors, Bergþóra enjoys spending time in nature and engaging in a variety of outdoor activities. She also has a love for music and dance. Committed to self-sufficiency, she values healthy food and has a particular fondness for chocolate.

The trouble maker

Lynx is a son of Sól and Lennon born in 2023. He is big like daddy and strong like mommy, a very good combination (if you are not going for shows because he is too big for the standard). Lynx is a crazy happy teenager with no limitations. He is a genius in getting himself into trouble with the pack and if there is a conflict in the pack it is about 70% chances Lynx is involved in that somehow. We have never had a dog like him. Then he is just happy jumping around very friendly to people, but teasing the other dogs making them crazy...
He works very hard and he is nice to dogs who are working with him but we have been very careful with who he works with because of his characteristics.
We hope he will calm down in the near future and just become a happy dog which he has the potential to become.

Pegasus

She also loves people but if there is a chance there is food anywhere close she checks that out first before she says HI.

In the beginning she did not look like she had the potential to become a lead dog but then with more training her qualities as a leader started to show and we have tried to put her in the lead a few times and she looks good.

He is a bit like a giraffe and does not look like he is a pure breed Siberian Husky, but he is.
He is a bit strange and sometimes behaves a bit like a horse that does not want to be shoed when you are trying to lift up his feet to take the harness off, he never does it when you are putting the harness on.
He is a very very promising lead dog that still needs to find a bit more confident but we are sure he will find it with a bit of training ��

Týr is a son of Venus and Smyrill born in 2023.

He is a big softy with people nice and calm but when he is on the line he is a bit of a jerk, we have to be very careful who he is working with because he is not patient at all, does not want to wait and takes it out on the dog beside him if that dog is not confident and strict. We truly hope he will grow out of this habit, but you never know.

Fennrir the wolf like

Fennrir is a son of Venus and Smyrill born in 2023. Fennrir likes people a lot and he knows he is not supposed to jump and get kisses, but he does that sometimes and if his nose hits yours it is a bit painful. So be on the lookout he is the dog with the darkest gray face in our kennel. In our opinion he is the dog in our Kennel that most resembles a wolf. But then he is named after a mythiological wolf

Fennrir is a sweetheart, and we have good hopes that he is going to be a great sled dog. He is promising in the lead and can work with almost everybody.
Fennrir belongs to our oldest son Þór.

Váli is a son of Venus and Smyrill born in 2023. He is very very sweet to people but he likes to jump on them and give them a kiss, but he is not supposed to jump but he does it anyways. It looks like he is going to be a good sled dog even a lead dog but there have been some complications with him teasing the other dogs on the line, but I think he will get over that. Váli likes to be a model and is very good at that if you do not think so he might do some photo bombing...
We really like sweet Váli belongs to our youngest son Jökull.

Óðinn is a son of Venus and Smyrill born in 2023.

He is a promising lead dog who has great focus but does not like to listen (he knows he is right when it comes to picking what trail to use...) but he will learn.
He loves people very passionately and you really have to be careful if you do not want a „French kiss“ from him. He is the smallest of 10 boys born in October 2023 and is a bit unsecure with his position in the group, but he will figure it out.

Rán is a daughter of Venus and Smyrill born in 2023.

She is a very lovely young dog that I had high hopes for being a leader but she is not focused enough on the trail. She likes to look at grass and stones and eat snow.
She is a very gentle little girl that got quite overwhelmed with all the attention she got from the males during the first time she was about starting in heat so she needs to find her confidence in the group again. But she is getting there.
We have good hopes for her being a good sled dog.

Kiiru

Kiiru the fast one

Kiiru was born in Sweden, the Team Villiviimas Kennel in 2023.

Her parents Villi and Vante are great short distance racing dogs.
Kiiru is super-fast, I mean super super fast. She really likes to play, and she is super nice to puppies. She is sometimes a little bit skeptical with strangers, but she is getting better and better every week. But the people she trusts she loves so much and really seeks their attention.
If everything works out, we are planning to breed here in the future.

Fanna the improver

Fanna was born in Norway at the Team Tuva Kennel in 2023.

Her mother is Dixie and her father is Bowie. Her parents are great long distance sled dogs.
Fanna is a super calm, easy-going dog that works super hard and recovers super-fast. That can work and play with all the dogs.
In the Kennel she is never in a hurry, almost all the dogs get super excited any time you open a door and just want to rush through it, but not Fanna she just waits until they have rushed through the door and then she will go. Most of our dogs just love people so much but Fanna in general does not care too much. She is just easy going. She likes cuddles but she is not fighting for them.
We are super excited to have Fanna in our Kennel and have great expectations for her to improve our dogs. Summer 2025 she had 10 puppies with Orion. 5 of them are staying in our Kennel. She is very close to being the perfect sled dog.

Smoke belongs to Hjördís, she imported him from Canada. He is a North American, Canadian and an Icelandic show champion...
Ragnar is an easy going dog that can work with everybody and play with everybody. He really really likes to eat, and he has to be told to be quiet at most meals, but he listens but next time he just gets so excited that he forgets.
Ragnar does not belong to us, he belongs to a gentleman that bought some land close by, but he was born here, and we treat him as our own ��

Smoke belongs to Hjördís; she imported him from Canada. He is a North American, Canadian and an Icelandic show champion...
Like her father and mother, Eik is a pretty girl. She is very easy-going and can work with everybody and play with everybody. So we like her a lot.

The original tall guy

Lennon was born in Norway at the Team Dopamine Kennel in 2022.

His mother is Peaches, she is from Norway and his Father is called Everth and he is Swedish. We bought him when he was a puppy.
Lennon is the father of 13 of our dogs. Lennon is a very very large sweetheart. Before he had his sons, he was by far the tallest dog in the Kennel. But now he blends in with his sons.
Lennon does not like to have the harness put on, but he sure likes to run. And before takeoff he sometimes kind of "loses it". But then he usually does not „lose it“ again on the tour and just stays nice and calm and uses our short breaks on the tour to recover and have a short snow bath.

Smyrill

Smyrill is a son of Rjúpa and Bylur born in 2022. His official name is Raq Na Rock's Myrkari.

His mother lives in Reykjavík so he was born there. He is the only dog in the kennel who is from Iceland and not born in our Kennel.

Smyrill is a sweetheart and a father of 5. He works well but you have to be a little bit careful with

witch dogs you put behind him because he can lose his focus if a „stupid young boy“ is running

behind him. He also growls a little bit at the other dogs in the dog yard.

Fönix

Fönix the hard worker

Fönix is a son of Sól and Sauron born 2021.

He is a very very hard-working dog. He is often working as a leader but if the girls are close to being in heat he loses his focus and sometimes thinks he also has to make sure that the young boys know their spot in the pack order. Despite that he is very close to being the perfect dog.
Fönix is a member of „the α-clan“ so Orion his brother is THE α but Júpíter and Fönix support him and together they are „the α-clan“.

Júpíter

Jupiter the happy one

Júpíter is a son of Sól and Sauron, born in 2021.

He is one of the happiest dogs we have in the Kennel, he is just always ready to have fun jumping around and giving kisses. He is a little bit stressed and does not like to wait. But we love him so much anyways ��
Júpíter is very very hard working and is often working in the lead he has good focus but „girls in heat“ really mess up his head... but that also gives him an extra boost (not really that he needed that) when he is working on the sled behind „the girls in heat“.
He is a member of „the α-clan“ so Orion his brother is THE α but Júpíter and Fönix support him and together they are „the α-clan“.

Orion

Boss of the boys

Orion is a son of Sól and Sauron, born in 2021.

He is one of the most important leaders of the Kennel. He is still not the fastest one but the most focused one. He usually does not care about birds or sheep (even though they are running less than 10 m. away. He just thinks about the track. The only thing that can make him lose focus are „girls in heat“, but still if they are not completely in the optimal mating time (we consider them in heat for about 15 days but they are only happy to mate for about 5 days, this is just in general, things are not this simple) he can be focused in the front if they are just not right behind him on the line. Orion is a flawless calm, really nice dog who we have great hopes for becoming one of the most important breeding stud of the Kennel.

Orion is the head of „the α-clan“ in the Kennel so he is the boss of the boys with the support of his brothers Júpíter and Fönix. Most of the time he is a gentle boss and just walks beside the younger boys who are getting a little bit „to full of themselves“ in Orion's opinion. Orion makes himself big and then the young ones realize that Orion IS THE BOSS...

Venus

Calm, focused and hard working

Venus is a daughter of Sól en Sauron born in 2021. She is one of the most important leaders of the Snow Dogs Kennel (she still sometimes gets distracted by birds and sheep). She is a very calm, focused dog who is very sweet to people (still she sometimes jumps for kisses...) and other dogs.

If all the dogs were like her there would never be any problems in the kennel except for one thing. She is not a great eater.... and if we want her to gain a little bit more body fat she just does not eat everything I feed here.

Also when she has puppies she wants special treatment considering food, she wants her meat and fish to be cut into pieces so she does not have to chew the food and minced meat is her favorite. And she got away with it when she was getting too thin while she was breast feeding her puppies. Spoiled thing!!!

Good and hard working girl

Svala is a hard-working girl born in 2020 a daughter of Krumma and Sauron. She often works as a leader but when we stop she goes „on a break“ and just wanders off to the side into the bushes to see if there is anything interesting there... so I do not let her work with the young dogs in the lead so she does not teach them „bad working ethics“
She gets very well along with all the dogs and we never have to worry about her social status. She is a bit tense but very loving. And just a good dog ��

Máni

Calm dog but a Crazy working dog...

Máni is born in the year 2020 and is a son of Sól and Sauron (from Sweden).

In the Kennel he is one of the sweetest calmest dogs that loves cuddles and attention but when you attach him to the sled it is like pushing the explosion button... he just wants to run and people are in his way and he does not want to talk to them, except maybe for 2 minutes if he is in the lead. So usually we start training the dogs for pulling the sled between 8 and 9 months old and usually when they are between 11 and 12 months old they can start working a little bit. But not Máni... he had to have allot of patience training because 2 seconds after we stop he started screaming and just wanted to keep on running and just did not see people around him he just saw the track and wants to go. Now after years of training he can be calm for up to 5 minutes but then he looses it... and then just stay away from him. He has never bitten anybody but how he is behaving can be a bit scarry. And than when he is not working hi is the sweetest thing... crazy how the will to work can change the character completely.
Máni is also one of our best leaders especially in bad weather. He has a super good compass and a map in his head and the will to work ��

Sól

Queen of the Kennel

Sól is a daughter of Askja and Evo born 2017. She is mother and grandmother to around 3/4 of our dogs. She has had 20 puppies in 3 litters.
She is from our first litter and is "the Queen" and one of the most beautiful Siberian Huskies we have seen (in our opinion).
She is the boss but most of the time you cannot see it because she is just calm and nice. But then if she thinks someone is getting out of place, she lets them know...
She is not pulling so much anymore but most of our power comes from her direct descendants so who cares...

The last days it has just been snowing and snowing and we have not had any wind at all. That means great track for dog sledding. The dogs are looking very good. We thought it might be a little bit difficult for them to start the dog sledding season this early but no they are in good shape and super happy about running in the snow.

We are looking forwards for enjoying the snow with our dogs and customers :)

Good evening. It has been snowing a little bit for 2 days now, the ground is getting covered with lovely white snow. The cold has started to bite our cheeks and we all of a sudden remember that the cold also brings a bit of a runny nose.

We have 25 super strong and hard working dogs eager to start pulling us through the snow and over ice and one grandma that would maybe like to take it a bit easy and just tag along and come with us few times a week for moral support ;) But Sól our oldest is the best ;) She is also the grandmother of all of your teenage puppies (now they are 3 months old) and mother or grandmother to 18 of our 26 adult dogs.

After next weekend we should be able to start our tours with full force and plenty of snow. In our opinion it is one of the most awesome thing you can do and we enjoy every tour even though we have done it few hundred times...

but the snow is melting away...

23. May 2024.

Only a month ago everything was white and quiet (except for the the howling ceremonies in the Kennel and occasional barking). Now we have allot of birds everywhere singing their harts out and the last snow by the kennel will be gone in just about two weeks. That still means that we have allot of soft ground and mud. For training the dogs this is not our favorite time of the year. The fields and mud trails are to soft to run on them and by the kennel the patches of snow are not forming a long enough track to run on them Ither. But we can go for about 50km drive in the car to a nice little town called Húsavík and up to skiing are there is plenty of snow so we can go dog sledding.

In many ways this is a great time of the year for people who like birds and also to see how the frozen winter wonder land can turn into green wonderland full of life and singing birds. Now it is also almost light outside 24/7 so you can put your headlamps into your draw and keep them there until beginning of August.
